Creating a Sensory Tube

Creating a Sensory Tube

Looking for a simple, budget-friendly way to add a new dimension of fun and learning to your backyard play space? 🌳✨ Let me tell you about my latest DIY project: the sensory tube! It’s easy to make, versatile, and provides hours of entertainment for the kids. Here’s how I did it:

Materials and Costs

3-inch PVC pipe (2 ft piece): $9 at Home Depot or $20 on Amazon
Two 45-degree elbows: $6 each on Amazon or $7 each at Home Depot
12-inch zip ties: $5.50 for a pack of 100 on Amazon

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Sensory Tube

  1. Choosing and Cutting the PVC Pipe

    • I used an 18-inch section of a 3-inch PVC pipe. You can purchase these pipes in 2 ft pieces at Home Depot or on Amazon.
    • If needed, you can cut the pipe to size using the saws at Home Depot or do it at home if you have the right tools.
    • I measured the side of my deck to ensure the tube, along with two elbows, would fit snugly between the railings, making sure it was raised off the ground.
  2. Attaching the Elbows
    • I placed two 45-degree elbows on the ends of the pipe. This angle works perfectly for our setup, but feel free to experiment with other angles for different play experiences.
    • The elbows are available for purchase on Amazon or Home Depot.
  3. Securing the Tube
    • I attached the pipe to the deck using two zip ties. Make sure to cut the zip ties down to size for a neat finish.
    • Position the tube near a water source, such as a hose or a water table, to maximize the fun.

How to Play with the Sensory Tube

  1. Water Play

    • The sensory tube is positioned near the hose and the water table, allowing the kids to dump water into it. This is a great way to explore water flow and gravity.
  2. Ball and Pom Pom Play

    • The tube is wide enough to accommodate balls or giant pom poms. Kids can drop these items down the tube and experiment with where to place a bucket or bowl underneath to catch them. This activity helps develop problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination.
  3. Exploring Angles

    • I also bought two 90-degree elbows to swap out and play with different angles. This adds a new challenge and variation to the play, keeping it engaging and fun.
  4. Pretend Play and Speech Learning

    • I discovered that the 90-degree elbows can be connected to create a fun pretend phone. This is fantastic for learning speech with auditory feedback. Kids can speak softly into one end and hear their voice amplified through the other. It’s great for practicing speaking or reading and is also fun to play together.

My Experience

The sensory tube has quickly become a favorite in our backyard play space. The kids are eager to experiment with water flow, catch balls, and play pretend phone games. It’s amazing to see them engaged in creative play while also developing important skills.
